News from Computing and Network Services.
Computing Center Lab reservations for the spring 2010 semester:
If you teach a class that requires a Computing Lab for instruction during the spring 2010 semester, we ask that you make your reservation now. We need to begin constructing lab schedules for the spring semester so that we can meet all of your course needs in our space on the 3rd and 4th floors of Baker Labs. Given this, we ask that all Faculty/Staff users of the Computing Center go to the following Web site and complete an online Computing Lab Reservation Request:
http://cns.esf.edu/AcadComp/Lab%20reservation%201.htm (Reservations should be made by Faculty and Staff only, please)
If you have already made your request for the spring 2010 semester using the above site, there is no need to fill out this form a second time. Please make your reservation as soon as possible to assure that a space will be available to your class.
If you have any questions about using this reservation form, please call Computing and Network Services (CNS) at X6861.
Please check your software:
Faculty should check the software that they plan to use in their assigned Computing Center Lab prior to the start of classes in January. We may require additional time to prepare for your class if software adjustments are needed. Thank you for your patience and we apologize in advance for any over-sights we may make.
AutoCAD 2010: This year, AutoCAD 2010 will be the supported version of AutoCAD. NOTE: This is a newer version than was previously indicated as being available for this academic year. If you have questions about this or want to obtain a copy for your Campus PC, please contact HelpDesk@esf.edu or call X6861.
Fall 2009 Computing Lab Schedules:
The schedules for the Baker Computing Center Labs and the Moon Computing Lab can be found online at the following location: http://cns.esf.edu/AcadComp/schedule.htm .
Reminders:
Network file storage and backup available to Faculty and Staff:
Network data storage is available to all Faculty and Staff whose PCs are joined to the ESF domain. To begin, users will receive 1 GB of backed-up storage that is available from anywhere they log in to the ESF.EDU domain (ESFADMIN). For further details and to see how to determine if you should be receiving this service, please see the following:
http://cns.esf.edu/storage.htm
If you would like to receive this service and are not, please contact HelpDesk@esf.edu to schedule an appointment to set up access.
Email quotas have been increased for ESF email users:
Network email storage has been increased to 1 GB for users of ESF.EDU email. Any messages stored in this space are available both on and off-Campus through the Outlook Web Access client available at http://webmail.esf.edu. If you need assistance managing your email to better fit within this storage space, please contact HelpDesk@esf.edu to schedule an appointment with a CNS staff member.
Certain Microsoft products are available at no cost:
Certain Microsoft Products are available for Campus distribution without cost to the end user provided the software will be installed on a State/Campus-owned device. For more details, please see the following: http://cns.esf.edu/MicrosoftProd.htm. This site also details substantial personal purchase discounts that are now available to ESF Faculty/Staff and Students through UBMicro.
Printing in the Computing Center:
The ESF Computing Center now charges for all printing. Faculty, Staff, and Students were given a 500 page quota to use on public printers at ESF at the beginning of the academic year. After this initial 500 page quota is used, All users will need to purchase additional quota. For more details regarding this system, please see the following: http://cns.esf.edu/AcadComp/Printing.htm. Note that Faculty/Staff charges were new for the fall of 2009. The print quota reset for this academic year occured on 8/30/09.
You can help reduce wasteful printing by utilizing the ESF central Copy Center located in Bray Hall for class readings/assignments instead of posting required items online for the students to download and print on Computing Center printers. Not only will you help save paper, you will save Campus resources and student funds as it can cost 2 to 5 times as much to print on Computing Center printers as it does in the Copy Center.
Important PC login procedure reminder:
Please note that you need to use your SU NetID and Password rather than your ESF username and password to use public/lab/classroom PCs on the ESF Campus. In addition to public PC access, the ESF Community will need to use their SU NetIDs to access the EvergreenX wireless network and the Blackboard Course Management system. If you need assistance with your SU NetID, can not remember it, or never had one, please see http://its.syr.edu/netid/ to help you manage your SU NetID, or contact the SU help line at 443-2677. Please have your ESF ID card handy when activating your NetID or calling the SU help line.
Visiting Instructors:
If you are a Visiting Instructor, you will need to go to room 317 Baker Labs before you will be able to log in to any public lab or classroom PC if you have not already done so. If you know of a Visiting Instructor who would benefit from this information, please forward this message to them.
We need your help!:
We have our new space with its new furniture and carpet. Now we need to keep it clean and livable. We ask that everyone play a role in keeping the Computing Center good as new by leaving beverages and food of any kind out in the halls. Even if you think the container is sealed, we ask that you not have whatever it is that you are consuming in the Labs. We ask that Faculty help us by reminding their students that no food or beverages are allowed at any time in the ESF Computing labs. Thank you for your understanding and patience on this issue.
Lost something?:
If you have forgotten any belongings in the Computing Center Labs (including the Moon Lab), we will bring the items to our HelpDesk/printer/output room in 317 Baker where you can claim them. As always: please remember to remove your memory stick before leaving the Lab.
Issues, Questions, Problems?
If you need help with anything in the Computing Center, please do not hesitate to ask our student assistants. If you can not locate one, send a message to HelpDesk@esf.edu or use the ‘Comments’ button on the desktop of any Computing Center PC. If you need to leave us a message, please contact the following: X6861.
This message is also available at http://cns.esf.edu
