Note to all ESF users of SU email:

Migrate your SU email before February 15, 2008:

Syracuse University has announced that they will be eliminating their mailbox.syr.edu services (POP3, IMAP, Orangemail, PINE) and migrating all users to Microsoft Exchange (the same email system used at ESF). These services will be eliminated on February 14, 2008 (end of business). If you use SU email, it is required that you migrate to the new SU Exchange service by February 14, 2008.

SU NetID (username & password) issues:

To use SU email, you need a valid SU NetID. If you are not certain what your SU NetID is, for whatever reason, or have never confirmed it, please use the SU NetID services Web page to:

bulletActivate your NetID (Requires a valid ESF/SU ID card) if needed
bulletChange your password if you have forgotten it
bulletLook up your NetID if you have forgotten it
bulletConfirm your password
bulletManage NetID-related functions such as Email forwarding (Important in the SU email migration process)

If you have issues with your SU NetID, please call 443-2677 and SU will help you with your problem.

Make the migration process a smooth one and confirm your NetID as soon as possible!

General ESF email information:

bulletESF uses Microsoft Exchange as the Campus email management system. Users receive their email through a client program such as  Microsoft Outlook (the official ESF email client), or optionally, Thunderbird, Outlook Express, or other email client.

bulletMailboxes on the ESF email management system are automatically protected from viruses and Spam using Symantec Mail Security for Exchange. Messages passing through the ESF email system are guaranteed to be free of known virus threats.

bulletESF email addresses are derived from information in an individual user's NetID. Please click here for further information about ESF NetIDs for Faculty and Staff. In an attempt to keep mailbox and NetID information consistent and lower the resulting administrative overhead, ESF does not support email aliases.

bulletESF does not support esf.edu email for students.

bulletEmail Client Settings:
See the link to the left for ESF and SU specific information regarding what settings you should use on campus, and at home, to assure that you can always receive your email.

bulletSU email accounts:
For problems with Faculty, Staff or Student Syracuse University (SU) email accounts that can not be solved by using the information available here, please contact SU ITS at 443-2677.

Email security setting for users of POP mail:

ESF email Accounts: ESF employees who access ESF email through a POP3 client (i.e., programs such as Eudora, Pegasus Mail, Netscape mail, Outlook Express, or Thunderbird and all Macintosh email programs) currently have to provide a user name and password to both send and receive their email.  Users need to specifically enable the setting in their email programs to require them to authenticate (i.e., provide a user name and password) to send email. The normal email client program setup handles settings for receiving messages, but settings for outbound email are usually optional.

Please click here for more detailed instructions on how to configure the various email programs in use on Campus.

Those who access ESF email via Outlook 2000, XP, or 2003 (Full versions): ESF employees who use Outlook versions 2000, XP, or 2003 for on-campus email management, and do not have Outlook set up to act as a POP3 client, will not need to specially configure any settings to be able to send email while on the ESF Campus.

  ESF offers virus-protected mail boxes:

ESF email is filtered of known virus threats at the server. In addition, if you are using the Campus-provided antivirus software (Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition) on your PC, your Outlook email client will also be protected. This will help assure that you are not responsible for spreading email-borne viruses.

  Beware of dangerous email!

Never open email messages with attachments that you are not expecting or from people you do not know.
