  Software Licensing

Purchasing Software Licenses (or legal permission to use software):

It is important that you actually own permission to use the software that you install, or have installed, on your computer. With software licensing programs, such as our Campus 'Microsoft Select,' the cost can be extremely low to install an operating system (such as Windows 2000 Professional) and an Office Suite of programs (such as Office 2000 Professional). Licenses, or permission to legally use these products, can be purchased through the normal college purchasing channels. An invoice or copy of the purchase order should be maintained in your records as proof of license. Also, please retain any original CD's and books that come with a newly purchased computer. Computing and Network Services (CNS) will not install or support software for which proof of proper licensing cannot be provided.

Remember: It is not legally acceptable to simply borrow someone's disk and install software without first purchasing the permission (license) to do so. The cost is less than you might think. Simply possessing or purchasing a software CD does not automatically give you permission to install and use software.

  Licensing Note:

When purchasing just a license under many State and Campus software licensing agreements, a user receives just 'permission to install' (or have someone install) the software. Disks and manuals must be purchased separately at an additional cost (when possible) or obtained directly from CNS.
