Sites of Interest:

Many Web sites are dedicated to PC or Internet/Network security. Some of the more valuable ones to users of the ESF Campus Network are listed below:

Anti-Phishing Working Group

Microsoft Security & Privacy Web Site

This site is listed first because most users at ESF use Microsoft Products.

Microsoft Windows Update Web Site

This is an important Web site for all users of Microsoft products. If a new flaw is found in a Microsoft operating system product (most versions of Windows), a solution will be made available here.

Supported Windows versions: Microsoft now supports only the following Windows versions: Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0 (incomplete support), Windows 2000 (all sub-versions), and Windows XP (all sub-versions). Windows 95 and 98 are, generally, no longer supported by Microsoft.

Symantec Security Response

Makers of Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition -- ESF's College provided Anti-virus protection.

Gibson Research Corporation

There is a section on this site called 'Shields UP' that users can use to test the security of their PC. If used on the ESF Campus, this test will generally show that a PC is secure. This is because of the ESF Campus Firewall. Please run this on your PC at home -- you may be surprised at the problems it finds.

Please feel free to suggest additions to this page through HelpDesk@esf.edu. We greatly appreciate the input.

  ESF Campus Firewall.

PCs on the ESF Campus are protected from the insecure world of the Internet (and Syracuse University) by a firewall.

  Dangerous email.

The single greatest threat to security on the ESF Campus Network is email.

NEVER open email messages with attachments that:

  1. You are not expecting
  2. You do not know the name or address of the person who sent the message.

NEVER provide information about yourself on a Web site or via email that you are not completely sure who will see the information. Always review the Privacy Policy of a Web site before giving up information about yourself.

Following these simple rules can help us all ensure a more secure environment.
