  User Accounts: ESF NetID

NetIDs (User accounts) at ESF

At ESF, a NetID (or user account/credentials) consists of 3 parts: a username, a password, and a domain. You need all three parts to log on to the ESF Campus Network via public PCs (coming throughout the fall of 2005 and spring of 2006) or to access services such as email or Evergreen -- the ESF Wireless Network (coming fall 2005).

The username is, in most cases, the prefix of a person's ESF or SU email address. For example, if a user's email address is eustice@esf.edu, then their user name is just eustice. Please see below for acceptable username conventions.

The password is information that should only be known to the user and not shared with others. For specific detail about passwords at ESF, click here. Students will use the same password they enter when logging-in to view their records on the Student Services Web site (via https://wwwinfo.esf.edu/student/).

For most users, the domain is currently ESFADMIN. Other domains that exist on the ESF Campus are CMWPE, MSL, and (starting in the fall of 2005), STUDENTS. Under certain circumstances, guests will be able to connect to ESF systems, such as the ESF Wireless Network, and their credentials will reside in the STUDENTS domain.

Currently, many ESF employees use their user accounts to access ESF email and to publish information to www.esf.edu.

General NetID (user account) conventions/standards:

bulletWhen logging in, if there is no space to specifically enter the domain (i.e. a two line log in), use the following convention to include the domain: domain/user name. For example, if our user eustice is a member of the ESFADMIN domain, the following would be entered as the user name in a two line log in: ESFADMIN\eustice. See below for an example of a 2 line log-in:

bulletIf there is a space for the domain name (i.e. a three line log in), it should be entered accordingly. When logging in to a PC after a reboot or log off, the available domains will be listed in a drop-down list labeled 'Log on to.'

bulletUser names and domains are not case sensitive, but passwords are.

bulletESF usernames will take one of the following forms as determined by CNS:
  1. The user's first and middle name initials and their full last name (e.g. Eustice B. Nifkin: ebnifkin).
  2. The user's first initial and full last name (e.g. Eustice B. Nifkin: enifkin).
  3. The user's first and middle name initials and part of the last name up to a total of 8 characters (e.g. Elsa F. Freeborn: effreebo). This latter is the convention used in most cases by Syracuse University.
bulletStudents: Remember, your ESF NetID consists of the following:

bulletYour SU email address prefix (The part before the '@syr.edu')
bulletYour Student Services Log-In password (ESF Password)
bulletYour Domain name at ESF: STUDENTS

bulletStudents: If you change your Student Services Log-In password, it will take time for this change to be reflected in your NetID. This time period is currently days (as of 9/1/05), but it will be reduced to minutes in the near future.

  Faculty/Staff

ESF Faculty and Staff should contact CNS to have their PC 'joined' to one of the ESF Campus domains. Please contact us for details.

  Students

All ESF students will be required to use a username and password to gain access to public computing resources at ESF beginning in the Spring of 2006. This will be phased in throughout the Fall 2005 semester beginning with the Moon Library public PCs and the ESF Wireless Network Evergreen
