Use current antivirus software at home

Please use current, up-to-date antivirus software on your home PC. This will help protect both you and the ESF Campus.

Remember: There is no such thing as a truly reliable automatic system. Never assume that your antivirus software is being updated -- check it.

Public service announcements:

1) Beginnning in the fall semester of 2007, all public PCs at ESF require users to login using their SU NetID, Password, and Domain. For students, the NetID is the same as your SU NetID and the Domain is: AD. When asked, enter this information to gain access to public computing resources at ESF.

2) Please switch to USB thumb-drives for all of your data storage needs (A.k.a USB jump-drives or USB flash-disks)...

How do you store your data?

5.25" Floppy diskette:

Born: 1976

Died: 1992

  3.5" Floppy diskette:

Born: 1981

Died: 2005

Floppy Disks, and even Zip disks, are very old technology with some serious reliability and capacity issues. As a result, PC manufacturers are starting to leave Floppy drives off PCs altogether and, increasingly, do not offer Zip drives as an option. The next time new PCs are purchased for the ESF Computing Center, they will not come with Floppy disk drives or Zip drives. USB thumb-drives will be the only way to save your work, and take it with you, from these PCs.
