  ESF Wireless: EvergreenX

Evergreen, ESF's high-speed wireless network, was recently upgraded to a more secure technology (802.1x), which provides an encrypted connection from mobile computing devices (laptop computers, hand-held devices, smart-phones) through the airwaves to the University network. Wireless connections to the Internet are available from the main level of Moon library, Several spaces in Illick Hall, and all of Marshall Hall for ESF Faculty, Staff, and Students.

Requirements to connect:

bulletA laptop, or other device, with 802.11b or 802.11g capability.
bulletWindows 2000/XP professional, Macintosh OS 10.3 or higher.
bulletInternet Explorer or Firefox Web browser.
bulletA valid SU NetID (username and password). Please note that this is different than what was required in the past and may differ from your ESF username and password.

Students: Your SU NetID is the username and password that you use to access your SU MyMail email account:

Faculty and Staff: If you do not have an SU NetID or if you have forgotten your password, please visit the following site to create or repair your SU NetID: http://its.syr.edu/netid/

Locations:

bullet The EvergreenX Wireless Network is currently available in*:

- Main level of Moon library
- Rooms 5, 8, 12, 244, and the main lobby in Illick Hall
- Marshall Hall
- Basement and first floor rotunda in Bray Hall .

* Connections are only guaranteed in the spaces listed above even though connection from other locations may be possible.

General Connection Instructions:

Your device must be in proper working order prior to attempting to connect to EvergreenX. It should be free of Virus/Trojan/Adware/Spyware Infection. If you suspect that your device is not functioning properly, please contact the device's manufacturer for support prior to connecting to EvergreenX.

1)   Power on your device and gain access to your desktop.

2)   Associate your device with the wireless network: EvergreenHelp

This part of the process will vary greatly from device to device (depending on make and version of the Operating system). For windows XP (SP2), you will typically see a notice from the PC that the wireless system has found networks in the vicinity.

At this point, you should follow the on-screen instructions for your device to connect to the SSID EvergreenHelp

3)   Start a Web Browser (Internet Explorer and Fire Fox have been tested to date) and go to the following site: http://EvergreenHelp.esf.edu

4)   Type in your SU NetID and Password

5)   Follow the instructions on the screen to download and run the appropriate 802.1x configuration tool (PC or Macintosh). After the tool has run, you will automatically be connected to EvergreenX. Under normal conditions, you will not need to use EvergreenHelp and the configuration tool again unless: 1) you change your SU NetID password, or 2) you purchase new hardware.

6)   You are now connected to EvergreenX.

Please check your device's Antivirus software to make certain that it is up to date and functioning properly. If you need antivirus software, click here to obtain Symatec Antivirus from ESF. Take a minute out of your day to ensure the safety of the ESF Computing environment.

***WARNING: Users who infect other systems through EvergreenX or who slow the network with Spyware/Adware or other malicious activity from their wireless device may be permanently banned from using this resource.
